416

Also some jackass is selling a WE 416 upper without BCG for $250! Haha that's only a little less than a full gun. Also he says it's "SUPER RARE!" Since you can't find uppers by themselves.

Haha, what a tool! You can get the whole gun overseas for $290.

I measure the RIS at 228mm front to back. The receiver top rail is 185mm, about the same as the KWA rail.

Well looks like I'll be attempting a conversion along with you, just purchased some VFC externals that I found used. Hopefully they fit as well, also its nice to see that JG614 uppers sell for only $20-30. If the VFC upper doesn't work I'll just order one of those.

Very nice! The only reason I used the JG614 upper over a vfc or other high quality upper, is the fact the that the top rail is a separate piece like on the LM4. I was trying to avoid having to refinish the gun, but I think I will any ways because I'm going to fix some of the aesthetic "errors" that JG made. Please let me know how the VFC parts works out. I'm really considering just getting everything VFC for the front end (except for the barrel of course).

Yeah I should know by this week, also ordered a JG upper in the event that the VFC upper rail doesn't come apart like the JG/LM4.

Well I have a couple VFC M4s and their uppers are one piece (cast, I would assume). From the pictures the HK416 looks the same way. If you look at pictures of KWAs and JGs you can clearly see the seam.

Other thing I was thinking about was hacking off the top rail and durafixing it to the upper receiver. As nice as it would be to have a one piece receiver, I remember seeing the pictures of that broken upper. I would rather be able to just buy a new receiver and swap the rail if something were to happen.

Wow, the JG614 upper rail fits the LM4 as if it was made for it. Honestly it fits 10x better than the LM4 upper rail and doesn't have any wobble at all. Though I am considering some sanding/shaving to get them flush on the sides. Now I'm just waiting on my VFC Rail, piston setup, etc. to complete the conversion.

Also I used the JG614 dust cover, it required a little sanding on the locking pin to work correctly, but it fit just right as well. Looking at HK416 uppers it seems that it was a little more color matched to the body in comparison to the LM4s light gray dust cover.

I also like how the upper fits the charging handle like a glove.

Thanks BeachEMT for the info!

Hmmm... Akira, I'm wondering if you would be better off just filling the gap between the receiver and rail with QuickSteel or JB Weld epoxy putty then sanding the entire rail. Filling the gap and then sanding would help blend the two pieces together (especially if you were willing to paint the upper). The only real downside is the possibility of having the filling crack over time.

Great work Akira! It looks great!

Which barrel nut did you use? I have been trying to machine the JG nut to fit the KWA barrel. It has been a royal pain in the @$$!

Edit: Sorry, I just realized that was a Noveske barrel nut. What barrel nut are you going to use?

R_King - Yeah I've also considered that as well, I'm going to wait till all the other parts arrive before I make my final decision.

BeachEMT - Well I'll be attempting to use a VFC, the VFC parts haven't  arrived yet so I don't know how it is yet. I've also considered modifying the Noveske one to work with the HK416 rail, we'll see next week.

Akira- Be advised that from the pictures, the VFC rail system alignment tab looks like it mimics the real steel. This means you will need to shave the tab off the front of the JG upper rail and shave a groove on the top of the rail. Hopefully the VFC nut fits better than the JG. Shaving it to fit is do-able but horribly slow.

You're right, looks like this will be more modifications than I had originally planned, oh well I accept the challenge.

Dammit! My parts are still on order.

I decided to get a separate KWA upper receiver, JG upper receiver and VFC front end parts... fingers crossed because I have the non-us version and that may cause some differences in the mods that I need to do.

You guys might be able to use some epoxy steel on the seams and then sand that down to be flush and look like a 1 piece receiver. Not sure if it's a good idea though.

Same setup as me, unfortunately the shipping is taking longer than I had hopped, I won't see how all the VFC parts fit until 12/3.

As for the upper rail, after looking again grinding is out of the question. So molding it seems to be the only option. Though Im afraid that it would crack or come out bad, I may just leave that larger portion as is.

Akira, I don't think you will be able to grind the rail, seeing as it is hollow. I was thinking of keeping the rail removeable like stock. That way in the future I could replace the upper rail with a higher quality one (ie. modified VFC or WE) or if something happened to the receiver I could just transfer it to a replacement upper.

Update on my project: I talked to my local shop today and they said they would call their VFC supplier Monday and see what we can get. They think they will be able to order me a complete front end set.

Yeah that's why I mentioned it was out of the question. Seems we're all going to have the same setups (jg upper & VFC front end).
