After examining my M16, I noticed that there was something that looks like a gas insertion spot at the bottom of the handle. Is this actually for gas? If so, what kind of gas and what does it do to the gun's performance?

Welcome to the board.  The KM16 is a AEG, it can only be powered by electricity (DC) and not gas.  The handle/grip houses the motor and the screws on the bottom are for adjusting motor heights.   Do not adjust the motor height if you are not familiar with the gun.

Thanks. My friend that thinks he knows everything about airsoft said that it was for gas. I'm glad I came here first before i messed up my gun.
