I'm considering a KWA G36C and read somewhere that the screws that hold the gearbox are of the self tapping variety, which would be a concern as it'd be easier to strip the threads.

Is this true?  The photos that I've seen of the new version gearboxes seem to show torx screws, so I'd be a little surprised if they were also self tapping.

They are T10 self tapping metal screws, if you put them back improperly, they will keep cutting threads until the hole is stripped... That is to say, if you intend on opening your gearbox over and over.

If you do not open your mechbox often, and take proper care in reinstalling the screws, the deterioration would not be immediate.
