The black finish is from a chemical dipping process.  Technically the gearbox is not heat treated but is put through several process to alter and strengthen the alloy.

There is no external changes on the KG36C. There is also no need to take the gearbox apart.  However, you can take a look underneath the mag well.  You should be able to see if the gearbox is black or silver.  If it's black you are most likely have the most current version.  Otherwise, you can also examine the hop-up as well.

i got my k36c from airsoft atlanta in early january, and since my box is grayish silver, i assume i dont have the upgraded gearbox. from what i see in the proshop the upgraded black gearbox is $175? plus install if you dont know how?? the entire rifle is only $265. youre almost better off buying a new whole new rifle if thats going to be the price of the upgraded gearbox. could you please confirm the price?

i havent seen any responses to the " can we get our k36c's upgraded?" questions. since i asked one i am still curious about the answer.

Yes, all the upgrades are backward compatible.

Notice none of the internal is heat treated.

Now take a look at the current 2009 model.
