UPDATE 8-3-12     It looks like KWA will stand behind the ATP and replace the broken outer barrel for free. Yeah KWA.

I bought my ATP at Airsoft Atlanta in January. It was my first airsoft gun. I put around 8,000 rounds through it since it was my only gun for a couple of months. The only things I have done to it since It was new is put dot sights (glued on and nail polished over) and used it with the 50 round mag from the FPG. I have posted all over this forum how great the gas efficiency is and how much I love the ATP

It has worked perfectly until today.

The gun has been in my air conditioned shop for the last two weeks except it went out on fridays and shot other people at an air conditioned CQB shed (SS Airsoft in Sugar Hill GA).

I shoot Golden Ball .25 exclusively. Of the 8000 rounds fired 3000 were Golden Ball bio the rest just plain old golden ball .25

I chrono the gun regularly with an old red shooting chrony and it is always in the 320-330 region with the .25s.

I use King Arms Softair Gas sold by Airsoft Atlanta. I wrote up a little on how I use this gas here

SN P111103142

The mag that was in it when it broke was filled (full --read my post) yesterday in the air conditioned shop. It vented a little on the first couple of shots then fired fine.

Then during one shot the outer barrel fell to the floor. It looks very flawed in the crack region.

I see I am not the only person here complaining of the ATP outer barrel cracking in two. It happens right along the line where the slot ends. The 90 degree cuts should probably have a little relief filed in it like we do to the front of V2 gear boxes to keep them from cracking.

Other reports of the same problems from a quick look

Please comment any how you like on what is the best and cheapest way to get the ATP out on the field again.

I keep going back to that package of JB weld on the wall.

TIA
Peace

This has occured in both the old M series and one ATP that I saw.  I would contact KWA for a replacement.  If you are looking for an aftermarket search for the M17 outer barrel on sites like eHobbyAsia, Uncompany, WGC, Tokyo Model Company...

The broken outer barrel is made from some non ferrous pot metal and weighs 55 grams.

Here is a guarder outer.
http://www.wgcshop.c...rel&catid=&cat=

I wonder if installing one of these:

Will it work without tuning?
If I get it to work I wonder how it will affect the efficiency. I get 5-8 bb refills per gas fill now.
If my barrel were not broken in two I wonder if I would be upgrading or downgrading the ATP by putting this one into it?

TIA

same thing happened to me. your best bet is to buy a new atp outter barrel from KWA, its the only one that will fit properly,  and yes, thats a weak point cause its exactly where mine broke. but it hasnt happened to me since. so i would not be worried about it reoccurring.

How much did you have to pay for the outer barrel from KWA?
How did you order it?

TIA

Hi phil, sorry to hear about your broken ATP barrel. Like optimus said, I would suggest you order a new KWA outer barrel by calling KWA since the part is not listed on the pro shop. KWA's telephone number is 1-626-581-1777. They are open Weekdays 8:30 am to 5:30 pm (PST). They are closed on weekends and holidays.

I looked at the outer barrel you linked, and it says it is made by Guarder, for Tokyo Marui. I would guess that a TM g 17 outer barrel is not compatible with an M17/ATP outer barrel, so I would suggest calling KWA and ordering it on the phone. Hope everything works out okay.

Sorry about that Philsaudio. We do have replacement barrels available for purchase, just give us a call. We have only seen a few out of the thousands sold with this issue. There is a weak point in the barrel that will break if the gun is disassembled improperly by applying force to the rear of the slide. We found that this can cause a hairline fracture but it goes unnoticed till the barrel falls out. This is not always the case but most ATP owners do not experience this problem so a replacement stock barrel should do the trick and get your gun up and running asap.

Hummmmmm. I never forced anything out of that gun. The slide always just came off when I lift up the release leaver and pushed the slide a little in and out. The only time the barrel ever hit the floor is when it cracked in half and the front half of it subsequently popped out the front of the gun and clanked on the concrete below.

Looking at the machining the barrel cracked right where the slot edge is at a 90 degree angle, just like the weak point in front of the cylinder on a gear box. Not rounding the edges like that creates a natural weak point by design. Engineered to fail right there. Please don't begin to place blame on the user for a design flaw.

Now that I have to pay for a failure for a design flaw to fix my gun, I would hope that KWA could give me and the others ( I am not alone on this as I posted a few links on the KWA site to the same problem and did not search for more than a minute for them) some pointers on how to never have this happen again instead of point out that since it hardly ever happens it could be MY FAULT and not an unfortunate rare instance of poor quality and design.

One would not need to be a metalurigical engineer to see the pictures of the bubbles in the casting and the position of the crack to know that this is by design a potential failure point and a poorly manufactured part.

I guess I was hoping to much for KWA to see their error and offer to fix it or show a mod for the unfortunate owners of the ATP to make that could prevent it from happening again.

I am thinking rounding off the edge right where it cracked off. I am sure if i did that you would then blame me if the replacement one cracked off again in the same spot. Everyone elses fault buy yours right? KWA KRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I pay for your mistake, that is repaid by you when; everytime someone is asking about buying an ATP and I see it they see this picture instead of the glowing reviews of a great gun and great gas efficiency like I have posted so far. Maybe think about that before blaming the customer for "rare" parts failures or manufacturing defects or design flaws.

Peace

As I said before "THIS IS NOT ALWAYS THE CASE". The reason I explained the problem is to let other users know this can happen because we have seen it in our Service Center. Other users have stated that has occurred to them because they did apply force. Please note that not all users post on this forum, some lurk for the info. What you have read are most likely isolated situations that do not affect most ATP users.  We distribute thousands of product all over the country and pay close attention to every broken product reported to our Help Desk, forums, Facebook page, and other sources. Unfortunately in mass production you will occasionally get a few items that have issues. I am sorry your gun was affected. This is no way an excuse but information from our perspective. We regularly evaluate our reports of every model to see where we can make improvements. We never want to turn our users away, and work hard to keep you satisfied. Please submit a ticket on our Help Desk so we can get more information about your situation.

Philsaudio, the sales  department handles parts order only. The Help Desk handles customer service issues, this is why I instructed you to submit a ticket on the Help Desk and not call. You did not go through the correct department. Please submit a ticket with your sales order number.

KWA made good on the broken barrel. I shipped back the broken pieces at my expense ($5.50) and they sent me a brand new one. What a company.

Peace
